Home Defense Tips: Safety During A Home Invasion

No matter how secure your home may be, there is still a possibility that you might become the victim of home invasion. In the United States, the Justice Department estimates that 1 in every 5 homes in the U.S. will experience a home invasion or break-in. In yearly statistics, that averages over 2 million break-ins a year. In contrast, the average number of break-ins in Canada is just under 300,000 in Canada.
If you are concerned about home invasion, the best thing that you can do is to be prepared for it in case it happens to you.
1. Pick a room in your home to use as the ‘safe room’ in the event of a home invasion. This should be a room that you can lock from the inside to keep your family safe. You should not attempt to stay and fight the intruders. Instead, the family should plan to get together in the room to keep everyone safe.
2. Stock the room with everything you might need during a home invasion. The most important thing you will need is a phone. The phone should not be a cordless phone, since home invaders can cut the power, which would render a cordless phone useless. Other things you might want in the room include bottled water, flashlights and anything you might have to defend yourself, such as a baseball bat.
3. Sit down with your family to come up with an emergency code word that lets everyone know to head to the safe room. It should be something that once someone in the family screams it, everyone knows to immediately rush to the room.
4. Stay in the safe room if you are experiencing a home invasion. Do not leave it until the police arrive, even if it sounds like the intruders have left. You should only leave the safe room when the police come into the room to let you know that it is safe.
5. While in the safe room, you should stay in a corner at the opposite end of the room, especially if you have a gun. This keeps you at the farthest distance from the intruders and gives you ample time to decide if you want to shoot, should you have a gun. Just be careful not to shoot the police when they arrive.
